Artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded in our digital society. Algorithms monitor what we read and post on social media, what we buy, and where we are located. A growing number of professionals are becoming dependent on chatbots, which consume enormous amounts of energy. Toy companies are building lifelike dolls and teddy bears that can report back to the company about children’s play and behavior. Elon Musk’s Neuralink project aims to integrate AI technology directly into our brains so we can keep up with computers. Human-like robots are designed to trigger our empathetic impulses. Technology can certainly make our lives more efficient, convenient, and entertaining – but ethical challenges are lurking everywhere.
