What can apple trees in an orchard teach us about managing people? Leadership is about setting direction and creating frameworks and spaces where people can see themselves contributing to common goals. More and more research indicates that an appreciative approach to employees also produces the best results on the bottom line. A completely personal experience of meaning is of decisive importance for people’s motivation at work – but also “basic needs” such as mastery, belonging and autonomy are decisive prerequisites for the employee’s commitment and the desire to continue delivering contributions in a specific organizational context. So what can I do as a manager to meet my employees with a positive view of people, which at the same time results in the organization achieving its goals and giving the individual employee quality of life? How do I navigate the tension between setting a clear direction with clear goals and the need to be an empathetic leader who uncompromisingly meets the employee’s perspective?
